The 2025 Championship saw an epic playoff between Tommy Fleetwood and Aaron Rai, who tied at an impressive 25-under total. McIlroy, playing at the Yas Links Golf Course, finished just one shot behind, a narrow miss that could have gone either way.

In his own words, as quoted by the Irish Examiner, "It seems like the last seven holes haven't really given me much this week. I made bogey on 14, trying to go for the green, but finished well."
He continued, "I gave myself some chances, but it feels like I left a few out there every day. Even today, I felt like I played my best, but after 11, it could have been a great round. That's why I'm six back from Aaron and Nico."
McIlroy, who returned to the site of his first professional hole-in-one, added, "You can push hard, but if things aren't going your way, it's tough to stay patient. That got to me today when I went for the green on 14 and ended up in a bad spot, making bogey. It's hard to stay patient when you see others behind you shooting low scores and you're trying to catch up."
He acknowledged, "It seems like no matter how well you play, they keep making birdies. That's the nature of this golf course, and it's been like that for years. You need to shoot low scores to have a chance. I played okay, but not quite good enough to get into contention this week."
Meanwhile, Rai and Fleetwood were thrilled at the opportunity to face a golf legend. Rai, the world number 30 and last year's Wyndham Championship winner, said, "This is a massive event, one of the biggest on the DP World Tour. To have a chance at winning, especially with a strong field, is great. We'll give it our all and see how it plays out."
Fleetwood, as quoted by the Irish Examiner on Saturday, said, "It was a day of patience for me. There were some great scores out there, and playing with Aaron, who played phenomenally well, was a challenge. He was unbelievable today in every aspect of the game."
